Back To School With Scholarship Recipients
August 3, 2010 No CommentsEach year, a large portion of the proceeds raised from The Greenbrier Chamber Golf Tournament are used to fund scholarships for Greenbrier High School students pursuing secondary education. The recipients were selected last April and announced during the annual awards ceremony several days before their graduation in May. “The application is simple”, explains Chamber executive director Amie Regester. “We’re looking for a Greenbrier Senior with a grade point average of at least a 3.0, and volunteerism—both for the chamber and in the community. We’re looking for leaders with a service mentality, and Audrey and Dylan are great examples of that.”
In a recent interview the first recipient, Dylan Spivey, talked about his plans for the upcoming school year. As a life-long resident of Greenbrier, Spivey found nearby UCA a natural choice for college. He plans on studying biology and choosing a minor in graphic design so he can keep his computer skills sharp . His long term goal is to get his PhD and work in the field of genetics.
The second recipient of this award was Audrey Dillard, who will start on her degree in business management this fall, also at UCA. As a high school student, Dillard’s favorite volunteer project was making and delivering valentines cards to Greenbrier senior citizens last February. She hopes to eventually start her own business, staying as close to home as possible. “I really like it here,” muses Dillard, “and I have a mom who supports anything I do, so of course I want to stay close.”
“We want them to stay close too,” comments Regester. “It’s a very positive cycle when we can support our students and help send them to college. They, in turn, want to give back and support the local communities they grew up in. They become advocates for education, business and service.”
